A few months ago, Karlee called me about newborn portraits in Palm City. At that time, she was still expecting her baby. However, a friend had recommended my newborn sessions to her, so she contacted me to book one. Since we didn’t have a specific date yet, we agreed to talk again as soon as the baby was born. And so she did.

That Saturday morning was calm, sunny and pleasantly warm. For these newborn portraits in Palm City, I drove to her house. In my opinion, the best place for babies in their first days is their own home, so that’s where this beautiful family welcomed me.

When I arrived, Karlee, baby River, her husband, big sister Stevie and her grandmother were waiting for me. Together, we started with the baskets and blankets. River was super easy to photograph. In fact, he was asleep from the very beginning, so we could try everything we wanted. What a sweet baby! Gradually, we added family members to the photos. Meanwhile, two-year-old Stevie helped me spread the blankets. She took good care of her little brother and also posed with him.

About at-home newborn portraits in Palm City

Palm City is a quiet community in Martin County, just west of Stuart along the St. Lucie River. It’s about a 40-minute drive north of Jupiter. However, for newborn sessions the location that matters most is your own home.

In fact, I always photograph newborns at home. First of all, the baby stays in a familiar, warm place, and you don’t have to pack anything or drive anywhere in those first tiring days. Moreover, I bring two baskets and two blankets, washed with Tide Free & Gentle. Then I look for the room with the best window light, usually a bedroom like this one.

Tips for newborn portraits at home

  • Call me once the baby is born. Just like Karlee, you can contact me while you’re expecting, and we set the date after the birth.
  • Keep the house warm. Newborns sleep better when the room is cozy, and sleepy babies are much easier to pose.
  • Give big brothers and sisters a job. For example, Stevie helped me spread the blankets, and that made her part of the session.
  • Wear simple, matching colors. Navy, white and soft neutrals keep the attention on the baby.
