Mother’s Day photoshoot on Hutchinson Island with Cassidy, her mother and her sister

During the same week as Mother’s Day, Cassidy reached out to me to arrange this Mother’s Day photoshoot on Hutchinson Island. She mentioned they would be staying at a friend’s house that day, and they wanted to capture this moment in their lives. And what better way than with a family photo session?

First of all, the day started wonderfully. The sky was clear, there was barely any wind, and the water looked calm, although with good waves. In fact, the scenery around the House of Refuge is breathtaking: it’s practically surrounded by water, with large rocks emerging from the sand, sculpted wave by wave. With these ingredients, plus a sunrise filtered by the clouds on the horizon, we began this Mother’s Day photoshoot on Hutchinson Island.

At that time, Cassidy, her mother and her sister were staying for a few days in this little paradise we have in Florida. Moreover, she told me that, as a family of four, they used to take trips to Florida every year until 2005, when they became a family of three. After a decade of short visits between Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Utah and New York, they were finally back on the Atlantic Ocean in Florida together. “What better way to celebrate the woman who made this all possible?” she said. Why Hutchinson Island is perfect for a Mother’s Day photoshoot

The House of Refuge, at 301 SE MacArthur Boulevard on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, is the oldest surviving building in Martin County. It was built in 1876 as one of several houses of refuge along Florida’s east coast, where shipwrecked sailors could find shelter. Today, it’s a museum, and the beach around it is one of the most photogenic in the area.

In fact, the coastline here is different from Jupiter’s sandy beaches. Large rocks rise out of the sand, sculpted wave by wave, and at sunrise they glow with warm colors. On the other side of the road, there’s a calm river with a wooden dock. As a result, in one session we can photograph the ocean, the rocks and the dock.

Tips for your Mother’s Day photoshoot on Hutchinson Island

  • Book early. The weeks around Mother’s Day are very popular, so it’s best to reserve your date in advance.
  • Match the mood, not the outfits. For example, white, cream and beige look beautiful together on the beach.
  • Watch your step on the rocks. They can be slippery, so we always choose safe spots.
  • Make it about the moment. In other words, hugs, laughs and walking together along the shore create the most emotional photos.
