Jupiter beach photoshoot with dogs: Ashley, her husband, Kilo and Pretzel

The story of this Jupiter beach photoshoot with dogs is one of the most beautiful ones I’ve come across. I usually photograph families, couples, weddings and newborns, but they rarely come with their extended (but closest) family: their pets. In this case, there were two precious and playful little dogs who had a blast on the beach.

A few months ago, Ashley contacted me from Minnesota, because she wanted to do a beach photoshoot with her dogs in Jupiter. We agreed to meet in early May at Juno Beach Pier. However, as soon as we arrived, I realized that dogs aren’t allowed on that beach (I have cats, and I don’t bring cats to the beach). So we walked a couple of access points until we found the right place.

A road trip so Kilo could see the ocean

As we walked, Ashley and her husband told me their story. They came from Minnesota, driving for two days, to make a gesture of love worthy of special mention. Kilo, a four-year-old black Pitbull, has a heart condition and is very sick. Even so, she still has a lot of energy, so they drove from Minnesota to Florida so she could see the ocean. In fact, this is the kind of relaxed session I aim for with all my family photos in Jupiter.

When they arrived at the beach, she couldn’t stop rolling in the sand. At first, she stared at the waves, perhaps with some fear of the unknown. As soon as she got wet, though, she kept coming back for more, because the water was so warm. The other star of today’s story is Pretzel, a one-year-old French Bulldog, who was having a great time too. Together with their mom and dad, they made this Jupiter beach photoshoot with dogs one of the most exciting sessions I have ever photographed. Ashley: wow, speechless.

Where to do a Jupiter beach photoshoot with dogs

Jupiter is home to one of the few dog-friendly beaches in South Florida, Jupiter Dog Beach, a long stretch of sand along A1A where dogs are welcome on a leash. In fact, many families travel here just to share a beach day with their pets.

However, dogs aren’t allowed on every beach. For example, they can’t go on the beach at Juno Beach Pier, so we always choose an access point where pets are welcome. Also, local volunteers help keep the dog beach clean, so bring bags and pick up after your pup.

Tips for a Jupiter beach photoshoot with dogs

  • Bring a leash, treats and water. Treats help get their attention, and a squeaky toy works wonders for looking at the camera.
  • Let them play first. A few minutes of running and sniffing helps them relax before the photos.
  • Book a sunrise session. The sand is still cool for their paws, and the beach is quieter.
  • Bring a towel. Wet, sandy dogs are part of the fun, but your car will thank you.
