A few months ago, a very pleasant guy called me asking about a surprise proposal at Jupiter Beach for his girlfriend. As the word “surprise” suggests, it usually involves some uncontrollable chaos. That’s why every effort must go into making sure the moment works on the first try, because it’s a one-shot opportunity.

So, as a Jupiter proposal photographer, I set up a meeting with him. We decided which beach access to use and, most importantly, the angle he should stand in so the pictures would turn out as we had all imagined. That’s when I met Brad, a kind and pleasant guy who was a little nervous. Everything sounded very technical: “let’s do it this way”, “at this time”, “you hide and I’ll appear with her”. However, from the moment I saw him, I knew this proposal was going to be special.

At dawn that morning, as the sun was rising, time seemed to stand still. The ocean was calm, gentle waves touched the sand, and there they were: Brad with his smile and Jacquelyn, a beautiful young woman who, I’m sure, already suspected something. They walked to the shore, and the moment arrived. Brad went down on one knee, in the classic way, just as it should be. Meanwhile, with her hands on her face, she said yes through tears of joy.

How Jacquelyn and Brad met

Jacquelyn and Brad met in the summer of 2018 in Washington DC. They both remember that night. During a work happy hour, they bonded over rooftop bars and cold beers while watching planes land at DCA along the Potomac River. He shared, “It’s been six years of nonstop fun with my better half.” She added, “Brad was the most fun person I had ever met and still is!”

In fact, their chemistry during the whole session after the surprise proposal at Jupiter Beach was exquisite. These things show, and I’m delighted to share this wonderful photoshoot here today. I still keep the Save the Date card they made with one of my pictures next to my desk. And November is already here!

How I plan a surprise proposal at Jupiter Beach

Every surprise proposal at Jupiter Beach starts with a plan. First of all, I meet with the future fiancé before the big day. Together, we choose the beach access, the exact spot on the sand and the time. Then we decide where I will hide and which way he should face, so the ocean is in the background and I can see both faces.

On the day, we share our locations on our phones. As a result, I know exactly when you arrive and I’m already in position. After the “yes”, the session turns into a relaxed engagement shoot, so you get the big moment and lots of beautiful couple photos too.

Tips for your beach proposal

• Meet your photographer before the day. Choosing the spot, the angle and the hiding place together makes all the difference.
• Face the ocean the right way. For example, kneel so that I can see her face and the water is behind you both.
• Share your location on the phone. That way I know when you’re close and can be ready in position.
• Have a simple excuse ready. A sunrise walk is the perfect reason to be on the beach early without raising suspicion.
